FamilyTechCast

It's been a while!

So, it’s been a while since I last posted. Obviously, this podcast has not happened. Yet. We are starting to formulate some plans, as Abbey is finally getting to be the age where she is starting to use the computer at home more and more, and has a tech class at school where she uses the PC (Dell’s running XP). She is also being more and more exposed to “touch” based OS’s like iOS, and Android.
Now that Google has released the AppInventor application -- which is essentially a GUI based RAD (Rapid Application Development) environment -- I can start to formulate some plans for the podcast, as we learn the in’s/out’s of Android, and document our progress both in the form of web posts on this Web site, as well as the podcast. Our plan is to build an app similar to the sample application that comes with AppInventor, and in the process teach Abbey and myself some JAVA programming. I, myself, have not had much experience with JAVA, being that I am mostly a PHP and MySQL programmer at work. Mostly all computer languages are very similar to one another, so it shouldn't be too hard to learn JAVA. With all the available resources on the Internet, and for Android development in particular, we shouldn't have any problem learning JAVA programming for the Android OS.

We are hoping to start learning by doing the sample application this week, so hopefully it will not be long before I post again. I’m also thinking about switching this site over to Wordpress, but the jury is still out on that one..
